Your Pharmacist
As a university-educated expert in medications, your pharmacist is an important part of the health care team, and can ensure that you get the most from your treatment. Aside from filling, your prescriptions, your pharmacist also provides a number of professional services.
WHAT YOUR PHARMACIST DOES
Before filling your prescriptions, your pharmacist makes sure that it does not cause any allergic reactions, interfere with other medications you are taking, or affect any existing medical conditions.
Your pharmacist also:
- Helps to prevent unpleasant effects and other problems by explaining how and when to take your medication;
- Advises you on problems with your medication, and what to do if you miss a dose;
- Makes sure that you know the name, correct dosage, and correct storage of your medication;
- In certain cases, keeps track of you after dispensing a prescription, monitoring the success of your treatment;
- Discusses medication-related problems with your doctor, if needed.
YOU CAN ASK FOR OTHER SERVICES TOO
As the most accessible member of the health-care team, your pharmacist is an excellent resource for your health-related questions.
Ask your pharmacist:
- For advice on your medications, especially if you have unpleasant effects or trouble organizing your medication schedule;
- To review all the medications you are taking (including non-prescription drugs, vitamins and herbal products). Your pharmacist can make sure you are getting the best results with the fewest unpleasant effects. This is particularly beneficial if you are getting prescriptions from more than one doctor, or having them filled at more than one pharmacy (N..B. Getting prescriptions filled at more than one pharmacy is potentially dangerous);
- To help you choose a non-prescription product that is suitable for you;
- How to use a non-prescription product safely;
- To refer you to an appropriate health care professional when needed;
- To demonstrate the use of medical devices, such as asthma inhalers, blood sugar monitoring devices, home care products, and so on.
